Through self-forgetfulness we can discard a material sense of self. This false sense argues that man is a fallible human being capable of good but also liable to sharp practice in the pursuit of his own self-interest. Through reflecting God, good, we have infinite capacity to express true self-forgetfulness in such fulfilling and satisfying qualities as unselfishness and compassionate concern for the well-being of others.
It is our task and privilege to follow the example of the Way-shower, Christ Jesus, who went about doing good selflessly and impartially. His love went out even to those who persecuted him. What greater example of self-forgetfulness could he have given mankind?
The Master's self-abnegation stemmed from his knowledge of his true selfhood as the Son of God. In his lifework he consistently bore witness to his spiritual identity. When accused by the Pharisees of bearing false witness about himself, he replied simply, "Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go." John 8:14;
