Why Be a Christian Science Nurse?

From the November 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many are unaware of the present great need for more Christian Science nurses. When the writer was recently reminded of this need, her deep gratitude for the privilege of this work impelled her to answer the above question in the form of this article.

The best Christian Science nurses are not those who love nursing more than anything else; they are those who love Christian Science more than anything else. If the nurse loves Christian Science with a whole heart—so much so that she can imagine no greater joy than helping in the healing ministry of Christian Science—she will love her work as a Christian Science nurse. She will find in this work a peace and joy "which passeth all understanding." Phil. 4: 7; It must be clear, however, that she will find this unsurpassable peace and joy in proportion to the honest, unselfed motive she brings to her work.

Good nursing is not easy; it is not glamorous. It is unselfed, single-purposed; and it calls for real devotion. The writer decided when she was sixteen that she would aim to be a Christian Science nurse. She was trying to decide what she wanted to be, so that she could choose a college and curriculum. First, she came to a clear recognition that her favorite subject was Christian Science. Though she enjoyed many of her school subjects very much, the subject she enjoyed studying more than anything else was Christian Science. The class she enjoyed attending most was her Sunday School class.
