Teaching in the Sunday School

From the November 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mrs. Eddy tells us, "Truth's immortal idea is sweeping down the centuries, gathering beneath its wings the sick and sinning."Science and Health, p.55; One likes to think, too, that this immortal idea is gathering beneath its wings our children. In fifty-two lessons during the year the teachers of the Christian Science Sunday School have the privilege of laying a spiritual foundation in the consciousness of our youth that will be vital in meeting their human needs and in perpetuating our movement.

The scene of human history is changing rapidly through the effect of Christian Science. Think what the next century will bring! The burden of proof rests on the generation we are now teaching. Impressing on their awakening thought the fact that Christian Science is the truth of the ages, which all the world has sought during the entire history of mankind, will inspire the children to behold their divine destiny. It will encourage them to seek Christian Science with the eagerness of any scientist who has entered upon the study of a great discovery. They can realize that divine Science is the Comforter promised his followers by Christ Jesus.

We are given the basis for our teaching in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. We should refer continually to the rudiments therein set forth by our Leader. One of the By-Laws under the heading "Sunday School" includes the statement, "The first lessons of the children should be the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17), the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13), and its Spiritual Interpretation by Mary Baker Eddy, Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:3-12)."Man. Art. XX, Sect. 3; We do not apply these lessons to infant classes alone. Many children who are entered in the Sunday School have never learned the Ten Commandments or heard the spiritual interpretation of the Lord's Prayer. Therefore the teacher must bridge the gap between those who have been taught these lessons and those who are new to Science or, for that matter, to any religion at all.
