In the early nineteen fifties I was on the point of returning home to England after a visit to my mother in Sweden, when I became suddenly ill with rheumatoid arthritis. As my mother was a practitioner listed in the Journal and I myself an interested student of Christian Science, we. began at once declaring the truth of man's spiritual, indestructible, Godlike nature and expected that the healing would follow. The healing, however, did not come at that time.
The pain in my limbs grew worse, and sleep was impossible. On the third day it became obvious that my elderly mother could not physically cope with my needs.
In Sweden there were as yet no Christian Science Houses, and then not even a Christian Science nurse. To get admitted to a hospital, we were obliged to call in a doctor on whose advice I was immediately admitted. There I was forced to submit to the treatment prescribed.
