One afternoon, my husband sent me on a business errand. As I approached a familiar railway crossing, I stopped. There were no trains coming, so I proceeded to cross. As I crossed the tracks, the car stalled. At that moment I heard the sound of a train approaching around a bend. As it approached, I tried to start the car. But the train was coming fast, and before I was able to start the car, the train hit. I was the only one in the car, and the train hit directly on the side where I was sitting. The car was thrown fifty feet and landed in a ditch.
When I regained consciousness, before anyone had a chance to reach me, I found myself in a sitting position beside the overturned car, just as if somebody had gently set me there. The car was a late model convertible. The top had been up and the driver's window open. I had been thrown clear through this relatively small opening.
The next moment a gentleman, who had been in a car behind me and had seen the accident, came running down to find me. He later told me that he had never expected to find me alive or in one piece. The local newspapers also called it a miracle. Very shortly an ambulance and the police arrived, and they wanted me to go to the hospital. I asked to be taken home rather than to the hospital. Upon this request, they started to argue with me. Finally, in a very calm, firm way I said to them that I was not under shock, that I was a Christian Scientist, and that I wanted to return home to telephone my husband and a Christian Science practitioner. This point is very important because at the moment I identified myself with Christian Science all argument ceased and complete cooperation was given.
