I have had many positive proofs that Christian Science really does work, and through it I have been healed in time of sickness and protected in time of war.
When I was in my teens, I was first attracted to this religion through the example of twin sisters of my own age who were Christian Scientists. They told me of their religion and lent me the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I started going along with them to the church services. It was not long before I realized that the healings in Christian Science were brought about in the same way that Jesus healed, and that the Christ, Truth, was just as available to us today as it was to those in Jesus' time. This made an indelible impression upon me.
During World War II, just before hostilities broke out in the Far East, it was necessary for me to go to Singapore from Australia. I was young and had never been far from home before. Feeling fearful at the prospect of war, I visited a Christian Science practitioner. She assured me that I could never go beyond God's love and care, and she agreed to help me through prayer whenever she felt there was a need. Soon after this I was in many bombing raids in and around Singapore, and on one occasion a ship I was on received three direct hits. In spite of all material evidence to the contrary, I knew that God is man's Life and that consequently Life cannot be obliterated. And I was sustained through other similar experiences by holding to the fact that the true man, consisting only of spiritual qualities, is always beyond the range of matter. All through these times I had a wonderful sense of God's protecting power, an awareness I felt was due to the prayerful support of the practitioner.
