Working from the Right Standpoint

From the May 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To demonstrate the potentialities of Christian Science, one must have a right perspective, and he must start from the right standpoint. For instance, one may mistakenly think of this Science as simply a remedy for human woe instead of as the divine Science of being to be demonstrated as the way of Life. He may think of it as a temporary means to an end instead of as the eternal reality of being. He may think of using divine Mind instead of demonstrating God's government of man. We must realize that God is the divine Principle, the cause, of all existence and that it is our business to come into harmony with this divine Principle, and hence to realize the love and beneficence of His care.

The first order of business is to find out what God is and what man is as God's likeness. From this we see the motive power behind all demonstration. The desire to do God's will is inherent in the Lord's Prayer and should be the basis of all prayer. W e are not seeking to shape divine Mind to our purposes but seeking to bring our thinking and living into accord with the nature and purposes of God. Much of our work is for guidance, unfoldment, enlightenment. God's universe and man are already perfect and harmonious. We need to understand this and come into accord with it.

Working from the right standpoint requires that we have a right conception of Christian Science. Speaking of this Science, Mrs. Eddy says, "It is not a search after wisdom, it is wisdom: it is God's right hand grasping the universe,—all time, space, immortality, thought, extension, cause, and effect; constituting and governing all identity, individuality, law, and power." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 364; We approach this Science humbly and reverently. We set aside human opinions, self-will, outlined desires. We subordinate the human to the divine. Conforming to the divine will is the highest possible good, the most desirable end.
