I was blessed with the privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School, where I learned that I could safely rely upon God for every need.
While walking home from school one afternoon, when I was a freshman in college, I was bitten by a poisonous, deadly snake. As a student of Christian Science, I knew that this was no cause for alarm. The Psalmist had written (91:11), "He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." I recalled Mrs. Eddy's statement "that Life is God, good, and not evil" (Science and Health, p. 288). I understood that God's love is ceaseless and ever present and that nothing could enter the allness of Love, for it was filled with Love and only Love.
Mentally I declared Mrs. Eddy's words "All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible" (ibid., p. 514), and recalled Jesus' words about his true followers, "They shall take up serpents" (Mark 16:18). By declaring and understanding these truths I had previously overcome the fear of snakes and gained the assurance that there is but one true creation, God, divine Love, and His spiritual universe peopled with the ideas of Love.
