To have been a student of Christian Science all my life is something for which I shall never cease to be grateful. I do not remember being ill often when I was a child, but on the few occasions when the need arose, illness was quickly overcome with the loving help of my mother and a dear friend who was a devoted practitioner of Christian Science.
At college, when I was away from experienced Christian Scientists, I first began to apply the teachings for myself. It was necessary for me to realize a greater sense of ability in expressive writing, as this had been difficult for me in high school and I had received poor marks in this subject. The following passage in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy often came to my thought (p. 89): "Mind is not necessarily dependent upon educational processes. It possesses of itself all beauty and poetry, and the power of expressing them. Spirit, God, is heard when the senses are silent. We are all capable of more than we do. The influence or action of Soul confers a freedom, which explains the phenomena of improvisation and the fervor of untutored lips." I tried to apply this, knowing that divine Mind is revealed and can be expressed by each of us and with ease. From that time on I no longer had trouble with writing compositions. I received high marks, and was selected to write articles for the school magazine.
Also while at college, I had a skiing mishap and needed to see the unreality of a sprained ankle, fear, and nausea. Through treating myself in Christian Science, I missed very few classes, the fear and nausea disappeared, and the ankle was soon normal again.
