Speak Up So All May Hear

From the November 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On July 5, 1897, at Mrs. Eddy's invitation, two thousand five hundred of her followers from all parts of the United States and from other countries gathered on the lawn at Pleasant View, Concord, New Hampshire, to see their Leader and hear her speak. This was her seventy-seventh year. Irving C. Tomlinson wrote of the occasion:

"She soon appeared and took her seat in a haircloth armchair upon the veranda. So calm, so still was she that her presence seemed to breathe forth benediction on those present. When she rose to give her address, her voice was so clear, her enunciation so distinct, that no one had the least difficulty in hearing every word she said. Never before had I seen a speaker arrest and hold the attention of an audience as did Mary Baker Eddy. In her face and manner appeared no thought of self, but a deep concern and love for the mighty Cause she served." Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 173, 174;

There were no amplifiers in those days, but reflecting the ageless charm and power of God's goodness, Mrs. Eddy reached everyone present. Her unselfed love was all-inclusive.
