Overcoming Apathy in Sunday School

From the November 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many dedicated workers in branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, are finding the answer to a question concerning the growth and prosperity of our Cause: What must a teacher in a Christian Science Sunday School do to overcome the evidence of idleness and apathy in his class? The answer comes in a positive declaration of the truth that mental laziness is not a quality of the all-acting, infinite Mind; therefore it cannot be expressed by man, the idea of Mind. The Sunday School teacher realizes that his mental climate and motive for teaching must express spiritual manhood with such clarity that only the power of good will be manifested in the class.

To accept the claim of apathy and attach this negative suggestion of animal magnetism, or evil mind, to a class is to fail in healing it of apathy. For a teacher to be useful, it is important that he develop a genuine, spiritual rapport with his pupils. When the teacher listens to his heavenly Father for guidance and instruction for himself, friendship with his class gains spiritual strength daily and cannot be limited to a weekly event.

To do rightly by his pupils, a teacher should acknowledge that they deserve and need his devotion of thought to their spiritual education. Mrs. Eddy writes, "The secret of Christian Science in right thinking and acting is open to mankind, but few, comparatively, see it; or, seeing it, shut their eyes and wait for a more convenient season."
