Keeping Up to Date

From the May 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In these days of discovery, invention, and rapid change, it is sometimes said that if a business corporation is not planning for ten years ahead it is planning for yesterday. And this could also well apply to individuals. It seems that in order always to be up-to-date, everyone needs to look far ahead so as to plan intelligently today for probable future developments not only in business but in their personal lives as well. If they do not, the day may come when they will be hopelessly behind the times, ill equipped to cope with the situation as it will then be, unprogressive, unattractive, old-fashioned, and ineffectual.

Christian Science shows that the prescience needed to ensure that one is always up-to-date is available to all. It is not exceptional or supernatural. It is not a special gift of prophecy possessed by a favored few. It is within the capability of anyone to express it when he understands the true nature of omnipresent Life and intelligence. The real, spiritual man is the expression of God, the infinite, timeless, divine Mind. He reflects God's all-knowing intelligence. And when men and women recognize this spiritual fact and identify themselves with infinite wisdom, they will demonstrate the capacity to foresee the future. In the light of this foreknowledge they can plan intelligently now and thereby ensure that they will always be in tune with the times.

In eternal Truth there is no time element. With God, divine Spirit, there is no past and no future, only the present. He is all-knowing, all-acting Life. His spiritual universe expresses His eternal, timeless nature and has no beginning and no end. It is ever present in its spiritual completeness and mature perfection. As the Bible says: "Whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it. . . . That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been." Eccl. 3:14, 15;
