Man's Glorious "lens and prism"

From the May 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Early one clear summer morning a student of Christian Science studied the weekly Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly on a screened porch overlooking a green lawn. The lesson revealed the heroic work Moses accomplished through listening to God and being completely obedient to Him. As the student pondered the qualities of humility and moral courage that this Lawgiver exemplified, she noticed brilliant rainbow colors flashing in the grass and thought, "Could anything be a better reminder of humility or beauty than a dewdrop reflecting the sunlight?" As she watched the play of colors, she realized more than ever the error of worldly opinion in often regarding humility as unattractively servile or as weak submission to human will rather than as a quality of the Christ.

It was Moses' humility that enabled him to listen at the burning bush when God told him, "Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground." Ex. 3:5; Listening carefully in the remote, lonely stillness of the desert, Moses heard God speak directly to him, revealing Himself as I am, the only real Ego. It was Moses' absolute submission to the divine Ego, Mind, or I am, that preserved his spiritual receptivity, enabled him to stand many times upon the holy ground of divine law and prove God's readiness to meet every need of the Israelites during their years of wilderness wandering.

Mrs. Eddy has made some thoughtful observations about humility. She says, "Humility is lens and prism to the understanding of Mind-healing; it must be had to understand our textbook; it is indispensable to personal growth, and points out the chart of its divine Principle and rule of practice." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 356; She further tells us to "cherish humility, 'watch,' and 'pray without ceasing,' or you will miss the way of Truth and Love." The promise of what humility toward God can do for us demands that we use it in our everyday life. If we truly cherish it as Mrs. Eddy advises, we will turn to it often and love to express it.
