Safe Driving

From the May 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There is much discussion these days about mandatory safety devices for cars. Christian Scientists are learning that far more effective than any safety device is safety thinking.

At the same time we do not adopt an impractical head-in-the-clouds approach. It is eminently advisable to check our cars, our alertness, our good judgment, and observe the rules of the road. But above all, the conscious recognition of God's presence, power, and guidance is the thinking that secures our safety. It is helpful to remember God's promise, "Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared." Ex. 23:20;

At the side of some highways this sign has been placed: "Think safety." Thinking safety—instead of thinking calamity—is a move in the right direction, but it still is in the realm of mortal mind, and is simply an improved belief. The only way to "think safety" unerringly and effectively is to realize God's accurate guidance of the spiritual man and universe. This recognition of divine reality eliminates the element of chance here and now. It destroys fear, gives the driver confidence and assurance, and brings the travelers safely to their destination.
