It was the summer of 1968. As Jack walked across the Boston Common with an armload of Christian Science literature, he was excited, but apprehensive. His feet seemed to weigh five hundred pounds apiece.
For days, from his apartment across the street, he had been watching students and street people from all over the nation pour into Boston's most famous park, milling around, looking for action. Several times he went down to chat with some of them. It dawned on him that what these people needed was some spiritual direction.
Since Jack worked at the Christian Science Center, he was able to round up some Christian Science literature to employ in a missionary experiment. Now, even as he set up his little display in this sea of humanity, people began swarming around, taking pamphlets and asking questions. Throughout the summer, many co-workers came to help.
