The Importance of Heart Qualities

Referring to the importance of heart qualities to the practitioner of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy once wrote to one of her students who was then serving as a member of the Board of Lectureship, "Dear one, cultivate this tender emotion, have a cell less in the brain and a fibre more in the heart in yourself and it will do much for your lectures and in healing the sick." Tender emotion is not usually associated with scientists. The cold, pragmatic approach seems more suited to the man or woman whose life is devoted to the gathering and study of systematized knowledge and the practice of it. Yet, for a practitioner of Christian Science, the Founder and most successful exponent of it in this age recommends the development of more love—more heart activity—and "a cell less in the brain."

It has never been enough to have mere intellectual knowledge of God. It is the expression of Spirit that energizes, purifies, enlightens, heals. Paul emphasized this when he wrote, "Though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing." I Cor. 13:2;
