"Visit the fatherless"

From the November 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We often read about the plight of war orphans and other children who have lost their parents. How we yearn to be able to do something about them! Many times we may feel frustrated in our compassion, wanting to help but not knowing what we can do or how to do it. Christian Science offers a way of doing something actively and effectively for these children.

The Scriptures give the rule: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless . ..." James 1:27; If one is to apply the healing practice of Christian Science to the problem, one's first "visit" will be within one's own consciousness. It will be a turning to the one heavenly Father in prayer, seeking spiritual understanding, striving to see His children as He has created them, spiritual and complete, surrounded by His love.

Christian Science teaches that God, omnipresent Mind, is the cause, or Principle, of all true existence, and that man is the child, the idea, of this perfect Mind. Since the Father Mind is always present with His child, the father qualities are always present, and there cannot, in reality, be any fatherless children. This is a spiritual truth, meant to be demonstrated in daily experience.
