I was first introduced to Christian Science nearly half a century ago by my wife, who was brought up in this religion, but it was thirty years before I began to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and to attend services in a branch church regularly.
During World War II, I realized that I had had some sort of protection beyond the ordinary, but did not understand how it came about. I had also witnessed healing through prayer at various times in my family, and was happy for our children to attend Christian Science Sunday School.
I had been studying Christian Science for about two years when the opportunity came for me to demonstrate that I understood something of the allness of God, good. While planing a long board, I missed my footing and fell forward, catching my hand between the heavy iron plane and the iron jaw of the vise. I could not move three fingers of my hand and had difficulty moving the forefinger and thumb. My first thought was to lock up my workshop and go to the medical clinic for attention. As I was locking the windows, I thought that this was a good time to put into practice something of what I had learned in my studies of Christian Science.
