I heard of Christian Science for the first time when I started dating the boy I later married. He had been a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School from an early age, and his parents were devout students of this religion. At college he started drinking and smoking, as many are tempted to do when they are away from home.
When he came home from school a few years later, we were married, and the drinking increased. The Depression and Prohibition came along, and as a result liquor was made in our basement. As the problem increased, so did my love of Truth. I had a keen desire to attend church and to be active in church work, so I joined The Mother Church and a branch church and served on various committees.
Soon I had the blessed experience of class instruction. I thought, "Now this drinking problem will surely be eliminated from our home," but that was not the case. For two years it was so bad that I was tempted many times to pack my bag and leave. We had a little girl, and because I had heard of Christian Science through my husband, I knew it was not the kind or loving thing to do to leave him. I knew I must hold on, face up to the lie, and stare it right out of my experience through scientific prayer in Christian Science.
