Is There Enough Love in Your Church?

From the March 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My church is a great joy to me! It is small, like the town I live in, but big with love and a sense of purpose. This church has proved, over the years, its place in our community, and the members are respected and looked up to because they are Christian Scientists! They stand united in one strong body, having a genuine sense of love and appreciation for each other, and the result is healing in the community.

Because of their unity and because of a willingness to reach outside of the confines of their church in order to bring the healing message of Christian Science to as many as possible, their needs as a church have been met, including the need for workers. How did this come about? It was the result of learning to love, or, rather, to love enough! No other single factor will have a greater bearing on the success of a church, any church, than enough love.

Only when we really understand God as Love will we be able to have this kind of love. In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy makes the following statement: "We shall obey and adore in proportion as we apprehend the divine nature and love Him understandingly, warring no more over the corporeality, but rejoicing in the affluence of our God. Religion will then be of the heart and not of the head. Mankind will no longer be tyrannical and prescriptive from lack of love, —straining out gnats and swallowing camels."Science and Health, p. 140;
