The Mutual Need of The Mother Church and Its Members

From the March 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Mother Church needs me? Of course it does. It needs each member just as surely as each member needs the Church.

The needs of The Mother Church may at first appear in terms of membership, finances, and support of the periodicals. But these human needs only indicate the larger spiritual demand Christ Jesus placed on his followers in these words: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." Matt. 5:14; Individual Christian Scientists, reflecting Truth, God, make up the membership of The Mother Church, whose goals recognize that individual and collective spiritual progress is found in helping all mankind. This, in brief, is the activity of The Mother Church and its members.

In considering these things I was led to review my own sense of priorities. My attention was drawn to Paul, who so clearly put the spiritual need ahead of the human when he said, "Though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing."I Cor. 13:3; Love, then, was first. I began to see that the love of God, Spirit, and the appreciation of oneself as His spiritual idea lead to love of others as God's ideas. Human consciousness, when in tune with God, Mind, sees the wisdom of putting the spiritual first, knowing that Love's resources cover all human needs.
