Productive Giving

From the September 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A branch Church of Christ, Scientist, was having difficulty meeting its financial obligations. There were also other kinds of lack in the church. The members recognized that what was needed to prove the nothingness of lack, the powerlessness of apathetic, fearful, or selfish withholding, was a better sense of giving on the part of each one. At a special meeting focused on the subject of giving, members resolved to give more to church, each in his individual way, through prayer, service, financial contributions.

These Christian Scientists considered Church in its absolute, spiritual sense as a complete, all-encompassing idea of divine Mind, as well as in its abundant expression as a human institution including their own branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Their individual efforts were aimed to give more effective support to church in all its aspects.

Theirs proved to be truly productive giving. During the following weeks this church pulled out of the red. It began to build a healthy reserve in its general fund, even though the time was summer, when experience showed that financial contributions were usually lower than average. In addition, testimony meetings became more active and inspired, Reading Room attendance increased, and members accepted committee appointments more readily than before. A number of members reported with joy that as a result of their work they were led to increase their giving to the Building Fund for the Christian Science Center in Boston.
