Are You Always Ready to Heal?

From the January 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What makes one ready to work for God, ready to heal? To be ready to heal is to live so consciously in the awareness of God's presence that one is prepared, at any moment of need, to silently or audibly proclaim His healing power. Many things may contribute to this readiness.

I remember an experience of mine one Wednesday evening. A friend and I had just come back from a Christian Science testimonial meeting, filled with the inspiration of what we had heard there. We stopped in at the restaurant of our hotel, and stood near the cashier's desk waiting to be seated. At that moment a very heavy gentleman with a cane, who was standing about three feet away from us, fell to the floor, striking his temple on the corner of the cashier's desk. It was not a good picture. He appeared to be unconscious. A lady exclaimed, "Oh, and he was to receive that award in the morning!"

I went to him quickly and stooped down, speaking aloud. I said something like this: "Don't be afraid. You are all right. God is right here with you, beneath you, and all around you. You are not hurt, and you know it. God is here." He stirred, moved, and said, "Thank you," although he did not seem to be saying it to me. He seemed to be saying, "Thank You, God." Giving immediate help under such circumstances is first aid as we understand it in Christian Science.
