Are we distressed by turbulence and conflict in the world today? Are we troubled by the forceful demands of various groups for the recognition of equal rights? Are we able to look behind the upheaval and rightly assess what is going on?
In Science and Health Mary Baker Eddy says: "Science only can explain the incredible good and evil elements now coming to the surface. Mortals must find refuge in Truth in order to escape the error of these latter days." Science and Health, p. 83 In the same chapter she writes: "The broadest facts array the most falsities against themselves, for they bring error from under cover. It requires courage to utter truth; for the higher Truth lifts her voice, the louder will error scream, until its inarticulate sound is forever silenced in oblivion." Science and Health, p. 97
Crime, violence, crippling strikes, inequities, repression, loom up as the result of hatred, fear, greed, lack, frustration, and the like. On the other hand, we can see the stirrings of unselfish love and freedom, justice and progress. In the turmoil of the times good and evil may seem so conjoined that it is difficult to distinguish between them. But with the aid of Christian Science the distinction is made clear, and the way is opened through the knowledge of God's allness for the promotion of good and the reduction of evil to its essential nothingness.
