To Pray for More Laborers

From the January 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The world hungers for the Comforter, "the Spirit of truth" that Christ Jesus prophesied would come and "guide you into all truth."   Mankind as a whole does not recognize the nature of its hunger. They think it is for money, things, people. But those who have some understanding brought by the Comforter that God, Life, is infinite Spirit, and that man's identity is the incorporeal, spiritual idea of God, can detect the true cause of prevalent unhappiness, loneliness, and emptiness. They see it as the condition referred to by Mrs. Eddy when she writes: "A mortal, corporeal, or finite conception of God cannot embrace the glories of limitless, incorporeal Life and Love. Hence the unsatisfied human craving for something better, higher, holier, than is afforded by a material belief in a physical God and man." Science and Health,p.258

It is a primary function of the Church of Christ, Scientist, to satisfy this craving. The Church is founded on the idea that infinite Principle, God, is the creator of all that really exists. Its purpose is the development in human consciousness of this infinite idea of God, good, and the realization that creation is the limitless unfolding of Life and Love, and that true objects are the incorporeal, individual reflections of divine intelligence, or Mind.

In proportion as this idea of individuality as the reflection of God, infinite Spirit, is discerned, humanity's craving is fed. The understanding that all true being is heavenly, harmonious, whole, when digested in human thought, eliminates spiritual hunger, mental emptiness, loneliness, frustration, and despair. It brings peace and joy. It introduces to humanity the power that saves men from the destructive forces of false, mortal belief that otherwise might drive them to fight, cheat, drink, take drugs, and otherwise indulge the physical senses in the misguided effort to find comfort. It destroys the roots of sickness—the fears, sins, and ignorant beliefs—and replaces disease with health and activity and wholeness.
