Background Alertness

From the January 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Searching through the forest floor for a lady's slipper orchid, one has to be consciously aware of what this flower looks like. If one's mental picture of the lady's slipper were not clear, he could walk right by an orchid in full view.

By the same token, the walker would have a difficult time avoiding trees, holes, and other obstacles if he were to wander with a single thought—"lady's slipper, lady's slipper, lady's slipper"—monopolizing his attention. But such a narrow focus is not needed. The conscious awareness of the flower's appearance is enough.

Similarly, Christian Science teaches that its students need a spiritual awareness, a spiritual sensitivity, in order to be receptive to good ideas derived from Mind, God. On the other hand, it would indeed be difficult for them to go through a whole day ceaselessly thinking something like, "God is Love. God is Love. God is Love." Not much would be accomplished.
