Mortal mind, materiality, finds itself in the chaos of conflicting feelings and unhealthy conditions; it is constantly entangled in difficulties. But when a human being who has been victimized by sorrow and misery turns trustingly to God's guidance, God, divine Mind, lifts him out of the darkness of erroneous, material beliefs to the light of spiritual understanding.
In truth, the concept of man as a troubled mortal is but a phantom of the mortal senses. In order that the true, or spiritual, man, God's perfect, harmonious idea, may appear, a spiritual rebirth through which the mortal sense of man is changed has to take place. In his talk with Nicodemus, Christ Jesus pointed out that men must leave the darkness for the light (see John 3:19-21). Isaiah had voiced a similar thought: "Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee." Isa. 60:1;
Jesus said of himself that he was the light of the world (see John 8:12). In many healings and in the mastery of great difficulties, such as the feeding of the five thousand in the wilderness and the stilling of the storm on the Lake of Gennesaret, he proved that he had dominion over matter and evil. Jesus teaches that through repentance and spiritual rebirth we can arrive at the restoring perception that the kingdom of heaven, or harmony, is in us.
