Not of Ourselves

From the February 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is very significant that the most effective man who ever walked this earth said, "I can of mine own self do nothing."John 5:30 Jesus was not merely making some meek statement of self-effacement. He was pointing to a spiritual truth of tremendous importance to each of us. There is a purpose to our being, and that purpose can be found by understanding what our creator intends us to be and to do as His immortal expression.

Our fulfillment is not to be found in mere human hopes and desires and plans. If we mistakenly think of ourselves as originators of good, we will be subject to thinking that perhaps the good we originate may not be good enough.

The material senses press one on every hand to think of himself, rather than God, as originating good. One may go forth brave and bright-eyed to conquer a world through certain human talents or abilities or even the sheer enthusiasm he feels he has in some special degree. Or perhaps he holds back from opportunities open to him because he is afraid he may not have what it takes. And thus he is inevitably set up for becoming afraid that he is alone and unequal to the demands being made upon him.
