Christian Science was presented to me when I was a young woman in England. However, it was not until about a year later that I was ready to accept the truths it teaches. At that time my husband and I were living in a remote village in Saskatchewan where there were only about fifty inhabitants and no church of any kind. At my request my husband gave me the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, for our first Christmas, and it was the most wonderful gift he could have given me.
During the first five years of my study of this religion I did not meet a single other Christian Scientist, but I read Science and Health through five times, and was convinced of the truth I was studying. All reliance on material medicine was given up, and I began at once in small ways to demonstrate healing through God's power. I began to understand what God is, and new views of His goodness opened before me. I felt as if I had been led out of a little enclosed valley onto a hilltop with a glorious new view of God and man.
At the end of five years we moved to a city where I was able to attend services in a Church of Christ, Scientist, and enroll our children in the Sunday School as they became old enough. I joined The Mother church and a branch church. I have always been grateful for my husband's unselfish love in encouraging me to have class instruction in Christian Science, which opened new doors of understanding for me. A few years later when my husband passed on, my children and I were sustained and cared for. Gradually a sense of lack was overcome as I learned to know the substance of Spirit, which cannot be depleted, and to trust God's guidance.
