Since my first testimony appeared in the January 1963 issue of the Journal, I have had many, many reasons to be grateful for all that Christian Science has done for me and my family.
One healing of mine in particular had a great effect on the members of my family. About nine years ago we had gone to the ocean for a vacation of two weeks. One morning I pulled up the leaf of the table and set it for breakfast, unaware that I had not locked the leaf in place properly. I was dressed in shorts, and after I was seated the table leaf gave way, spilling boiling liquid on me. I instantly turned to God in prayer, knowing that in God's kingdom nothing bad had really happened. Our teen-age son was ready to assist me. I asked him to read to me from the Bible, and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. He read the twenty-third and ninety-first Psalms, then turned to Science and Health. When he read (p. 393): "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man," I did just that —mentally and physically. As I did this, I could see the severe redness disappear entirely from one leg and to a good degree from the other. The remaining area became blistered, but there was no pain.
The following day I had to handle self-pity and the sympathy expressed by the family, as they know how much I enjoy the ocean. I affirmed to myself that I was not working out better matter but my at-one-ment with God and the spiritual idea of man. After the first day and a half I was on the beach all day and walking the boardwalk at night.
