A woman I know took me to a service in a Church of Christ, Scientist. I was deeply impressed. The service made me happy and satisfied my longing. I had been searching for this truth for a long time. I shall never leave it again. There is only one Truth—God.
A few days later I went to a Christian Science Reading Room and purchased three books: Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, in three different languages—Russian for my wife, Portuguese for my daughter, and German for myself. At that time I was hardly able to read, and then only German print. Through the study of Christian Science literature, through patient spelling out of the words, and prayer for spiritual enlightenment and understanding, I learned to read.
In the beginning it was very difficult, but soon I was reading the weekly Lesson Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly; reading it took hours. From that time to this, I start with the "Daily Prayer" by Mrs. Eddy from the Manual of The Mother Church before I read anything else. This helps me to understand what I read. The prayer begins (Art. VIII, Sect. 4): "'Thy kingdom come;' let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin."
