I have every reason to be grateful for the ministrations of Christian Science and for Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered and presented this Science to the world. For over forty years her teachings have been my mainstay, and during that time I have witnessed some remarkable healings through a correct application of this Science.
I had been sent to a hospital in my native Leeds, suffering from severe hemorrhages, and had been there for nine months, undergoing medical treatment. It occurred to me to inquire of a family friend who was a Christian Scientist whether her religion could help me and, if so, what I should do. She said Christian Science could certainly help me and that I should borrow Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy from the local Christian Science Reading Room and read it with the Bible every day. The book was borrowed for me, and after reading a few pages I gained such immediate hope and confidence that I left the hospital against the advice of the surgeons, who wanted to operate to cure the condition. As soon as I was able to do so I attended the Sunday services and Wednesday testimony meetings at a Church of Christ, Scientist.
The first thing that impressed me about Science and Health was the perfect logic of the statements it contains. On the very first page of Chapter 1 I read, "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." And (ibid., p. 249), "Either there is no omnipotence, or omnipotence is the only power." Just two of the arresting statements that commanded my attention, even when I still needed proof of the existence of an infinite Mind.
