Consciousness is no mechanism

Do You Really Need Time to Think?

From the May 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes we seem to have too many tasks to accomplish at one time. Then some things have to wait. Sometimes we say it is thought itself that must wait. But this is to say that our attention is limited and that thought takes time, just as any human task. It is to regard thought as a sequential chain of human evaluations, rather than as an instantaneous revelation of divine Mind, God.

Looked at more deeply, there is a further implication. To accept that thought takes time is to accept that lack of time deprives one of thought. Bluntly, this implies that we can be deprived of divine Mind itself by being convinced that we are deprived of time.

In reality man can never be separated from infinite Mind, God, the ever-present source of thought. But for us to accept a shortage of time can be to put a brake on our spiritual progress. For example, there are no deadlines on the time one has to grow in spiritual understanding, but there are repeated deadlines on human commitments. Our study of Christian Science may be put off until we can give it "the consideration it deserves," but such a solution may rely on a desire for human thoroughness rather than spiritual inspiration and may rest on doubt more than conviction. That is, one may wish to fully understand all the implications of Science through human reason rather than to trust that reason will be illumined by divine revelation. This would be an attempt to trap Spirit in matter or the confines of a human intellect. And such an overconcern with time pressures could rob one of spontaneity in spiritual growth.
