There Is No Passing On

From the May 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In that gentle vestment of "passing on," death is sometimes made to assume the robe of dignity and respectability, which makes it look almost desirable! We should be watchful of this subtle form of animal magnetism. Death — the enemy of Life — is to be destroyed.

The allness of Life, Truth, and Love and the nothingness of disease, sin, death, are demonstrable fact. According to Christian Science, all may know and prove this for themselves. In the infinitude of ever-present Life, death is a mere dream of mortal sense — without substance and without reality.

But mortal mind — the unscientific view of God and man — would have mankind unguarded and deceived into a hypnotic dream of believing that man is mortal — rather than Life's idea — and passes on. We have to see through this lie so that we do not unconsciously come to accept the euphemism "passing on" — as though it were a better way of dying. Whatever cloak evil puts on, we should not be deceived into lowering our mental guard on death as an enemy to be destroyed moment by moment in human consciousness. Passing on should not become a subtle temptation to unconsciously accept some Oriental philosophy and mysticism or theory of life and death, such as the transmigration of the soul; these are no substitutes for the Christianly scientific fact of the eternal allness and infinitude of Life, which is God, and of man as the image of Life.
