Memories to Treasure

From the May 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

True being is the eternally perfect, spiritual expression of God, divine Life. Its development is the unfoldment of the ideas of infinite Mind, God. Its history is the record of the stately progress of the appearing of divine Love's manifestation and purpose in immortal consciousness.

Human history, on the other hand, is a record of dream occurrences. It is the account of events as they appear to the false, so-called mind of mortals, which is conscious only of its own self-constructed phenomena. This history is not a statement of man's true existence as God's offspring. However, some incidents in this account may indicate gleams of spiritual intelligence through which the Christly understanding of the true spiritual nature of actual being — created and governed by God, divine Principle — dawns in human consciousness and in a measure transforms it.

These gleams of eternal Truth in the history of an individual or a nation are always precious — they are memories to treasure. We find many instances in the Bible in which spiritual ideas came to enlighten and save people from danger, bring them freedom, guide them to better social conditions and more Godlike being. These glimpses of reality did not come only to those who were consistently good and strong, alert to hear God's messages, but also to people who made mistakes, were not always steadfast in faith, and sometimes disobeyed God's laws. Yet these people were sufficiently awake to spiritual truth to receive the blessing of God's messages even at moments of fear and depression — as when Elijah slept under a juniper tree See I Kings 19:4; — or of doubt, as when Thomas was reassured by Christ Jesus after the resurrection.See John 20:24-28; Those moments of human weakness became not only opportunities for inspiration at the time but also memories to be recorded for posterity's enlightenment. Their lessons should not be forgotten.
