If I were asked to single out the most valuable thing (apart from love) my parents gave to me as a child, I would say it was allowing me to attend a Christian Science Sunday School. I always loved the Sunday School and can remember feeling sad when I had to leave at the age of twenty, even though I could still attend church. Very soon, because of my deep yearning to know God better and to commit myself to Christian Science, church membership became irresistible. The first duty given me as a member was teaching in the Sunday School. I felt I had come full circle.
I have found Sunday School teaching just as rewarding as being a pupil, if not more so. After each Sunday morning session I can't help thinking, "How I love those weekly sessions!" It is exhilarating to know I am learning right along with the pupils, working with them every step of the way.
Christian Science reveals that God is Mind, the source of all real knowledge, intelligence, and inspiration; therefore all true ideas originate in Mind, not in the teacher. An acknowledgment of this fact relieves the teacher of false responsibility, and this consequently blesses the class. Christ Jesus, the greatest of teachers, did not take personal credit for the truth he taught and the healing he accomplished. "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work," John 5:17; he told his critics when they sought to persecute him for healing on the sabbath day. The more the teacher can recognize God's control, the better.
