Include Me

From the July 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science unfolds new views of man and woman and the heritage of freedom, health, and happiness available to us. As we demonstrate the rules of this Science in daily life, wonderful perceptions of God and of our individual relationship to Him open in thought. We start to realize that undesirable character traits, hereditary attitudes, and health beliefs do not have the power we had supposed. We advance in the consciousness of spiritual perfection and power, of man's reflection of God, omnipresent Life and Love. And we learn to include ourselves in this infinite goodness.

As a higher viewpoint reveals more of the landscape, so it's normal for ascending human thought to see its own need for more spirituality. Habits and familiar mental attitudes are carefully examined. We start to discriminate between different types of thought and to see where they are leading us. We wake to the supposed influence of evil in our thought, so subtle we might overlook it.

I passed an empty house recently. It was a strong house built of brick, but with one wall cracked from top to bottom. Looking closer, one could see that a tree had grown beside the building and in spreading its roots had undermined the foundation, literally cracking the house in two. But the tree must have started as a tiny seedling. Probably nobody living in the house noticed it at first. Had they become so used to seeing it in their garden that they overlooked its threat to their home?
