"Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared" (Ex. 23:20). These words from the Bible typify an experience I had about fifteen years ago. My wife, who is not a Christian Scientist, was suffering from the effects of postpartum depression and a nervous breakdown. Our son was about three years of age, and because of his mother's health, it became necessary to find a boarding school where he might stay for an indefinite period. I contacted a scholastic agency for possible places.
A Christian Science practitioner was praying specifically for our family in our need to find a school for the boy; and I was greatly comforted by his assurance that God's care and direction would be evident in our lives. In spite of fear that the child was too young to be parted from his parents and that he might be permanently disturbed, I was able to remain calm.
I traveled to London with our son and a friend who was to care for him while I visited the schools. There was a large variety to choose from, but I felt directed to a certain area to visit two. I was unable to contact one but made an appointment with the owner of the other school. At one point during our talk I said, "I feel I must tell you now that I am a Christian Scientist." She paused for a moment and then said, "Well, that's really most interesting. So am I." I cannot express in words how close I felt to God at that moment. It was obvious that my search was at an end and that this was the proper school for our son. Because of a quite unforeseen turn of events, there was just one vacancy, and our boy filled it. He stayed there for five happy years, until he left to attend a preparatory school. This son is now a teen-ager whose zest for life and outgoing friendliness are commented on by all who meet him.
