It is Sunday morning and Sunday School begins. Those of us who are teachers watch the little children's fidgeting feet, their Hymnals held askew (or dropped), their big eyes studying the late arrivers or the squeaking pedal of the piano. We listen gratefully as the superintendent reads the words of the opening hymn. Aware of the enormous promise of this one hour, we pray quietly.
Sunday School, for teachers as well as students, is a rare composite of quiet moments, brave questions, bright expectations, outbursts of laughter, earnest reasoning, and, above all, revelations from prayer. Children may remember their friends, their teachers, Bible stories made relevant, facts gathered, and insights shared. We can hope that, more than all else, they will remember the Christian Science Sunday School because there they learned of and felt God's presence and care.
We asked several youngsters why they came to Sunday School. One answered, "Because.'' "Because why?" the Church in Action editor persisted. "Because my mother wants me to go because that's where God is happening."
