When I was a small boy, I received my first proof of the healing efficacy of Christian Science. While riding my new tricycle I went over the handlebars and landed face first on the pavement. My mother, who was walking close at hand, picked me up. My lower lip and the adjacent chin skin were deeply gashed. While caring for the wound with a handkerchief, she recited to me "the scientific statement of being" (see Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468). We boarded a streetcar and were at the home of a Christian Science practitioner in a very few minutes.
Although experiencing a lot of pain and probably some fear as we arrived, I well remember the atmosphere of loving assurance the practitioner radiated as we sat down. She turned my attention from the wound to the wonderfully encouraging Bible stories of Daniel in the lions' den, and David and Goliath. Then she said to me, "Now we will be quiet and pray to God." We were quiet for perhaps ten minutes, and the practitioner dismissed us with the firm statement, "All is well." The bleeding had ceased and the pain was gone.
The time of day was early afternoon. By the time my father arrived home from work at 5 p.m, the torn lip and the chin skin were each perfectly knit, and the swelling had completely subsided. He was unaware of the injury until my mother later told him about it. So the power of the Word of God to restore harmony and health was clearly made evident to me. The memory of this beautiful healing has been an encouragement on countless occasions through all these years.
