While serving as Second Reader in our...

From the December 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While serving as Second Reader in our branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I developed the symptoms of laryngitis on a Friday evening. Saturday morning I called a Christian Science practitioner, and within two hours I could talk without effort. That evening I participated normally in the practice for the Sunday service, and the next morning I was in my place and spoke and sang with no difficulty.

This meant a great deal to me as, a few years before, the same problem had occurred while I was teaching high school. It was my first teaching position, and I had been burdened by a false sense of my own responsibility, which is what had needed healing in this latest instance also. I had not really applied Christian Science then; I had just whispered through my days, treating the problem as a joke. This time, I obviously couldn't just whisper. And I really wanted to prove the healing power of Christian Science and to do my duties properly. The difference in my attitude and in the results in the two situations was marked. I felt very grateful for this demonstration.

More recently one of my thumbs became painfully out of place. After many weeks, my own prayers did not seem to bring any change, and so finally I asked my husband to give me metaphysical treatment. He supported me lovingly, and then just before we were to leave on a trip, I asked a practitioner for help. The thumb became less painful, and I could again do almost everything with that hand. The problem ceased to dominate my thinking, even though the thumb still was not normal.
