The ability to cope

From the March 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If problems have sorely tried you lately, think of the experiences of Paul! "Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; ...in weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness." II Cor. 11:25,27

Yet this apostle also said, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me." Phil. 4:13 Recognizing his real identity as belonging to divine Mind, Paul drew on the strength and dominion of Mind to sustain him and to equip him to continue in service to others.

Coping involves facing up to adversity and challenges. Certainly this verse in Genesis provides a spiritual basis for effective coping: "God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion...." Gen. 1:26 We include dominion because in the eternal nature of true being we are the image of God, reflecting His supremacy, command, and control. As we understand this, we are able to exercise our dominion. We are able to triumph over any adverse condition, to do whatever must be done.
