Is there a safe place?
Twentieth-century threats to mankind's safety certainly seem more sophisticated than the dangers of Elijah's day. He hid in a cave in order to escape Jezebel's threat to kill him. But the answers to the threats of today, as of yesterday, can be found in our relationship to God.
"What doest thou here, Elijah?" I Kings 19:9 What was he doing—fearing physicality and at the same time seeking safety in it? Roused from his lethargy, he came out and stood where he belonged—on the mountaintop. Menacing evil seemed to cut loose: earthquake, wind, and fire. When he realized that God was not in any of these, he could see there was no power in them. Nor could there be power in Jezebel's plan to eliminate him.
