Throughout her writings Mrs. Eddy employs seven terms for God interchangeably—Spirit, Mind, Soul, Principle, Truth, Life, and Love. She writes of these synonyms: "They refer to one absolute God. They are also intended to express the nature, essence, and wholeness of Deity." Science and Health, p. 465
A thorough study of each of these synonyms with the aid of the Concordance to Mrs. Eddy's works is richly rewarding in showing us the true character of God as Father-Mother and man as the son of God, held forever perfect in His sight. Prayerful study of the synonym Soul brings to light man's indestructible identity as the reflection, or expression, of Spirit. Even a glimpse of this identity frees in us unlimited capacities to demonstrate the spiritual dominion that characterizes our true individuality.
The resources of Soul are infinite. They are invariably at our disposal. Consider joy, for example. As an emanation of Soul, joy is spiritual and ever present, and we reflect it. Joy cannot be begged or bought because it is a divine attribute. We all can experience it proportionably as we are willing to express it. The Master assures us, "Your joy no man taketh from you." John 16:22 As we ponder this gift of joy we see how valuable, even indispensable, it is to us. The joy that attends our gratitude is a measure of the sincerity of our gratitude.
