Many years ago, before I became a Christian Scientist, I incurred a severe head wound in an auto accident. While I was waiting for an ambulance, a student of Science knelt by my side and whispered, "God is with you." Suddenly I felt an inward assurance, "God is right here, God is right with me." I felt a surge of strength and tried to rise and tell everyone about it. Simultaneously, the bleeding ceased. At the hospital a surgeon, who stitched up the head wound, expressed some alarming predictions concerning my condition. I was told I might remain there for two weeks. Within forty-eight hours I was released. I had declined medicine because I felt no need for it. Uppermost in my consciousness was to leave the hospital and tell the world I had found God. Within two weeks I was completely recovered, and I had no adverse effects from the accident.
Two years later I began an earnest study of Christian Science. From an early age I had felt unhappy with life and had longed to learn, "Why am I here? Where is God? What is my relation to Him?" Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy supplied me with answers. When I read this passage I recalled the Christian action of the Scientist who had knelt beside me at the accident scene (p. 570): "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences." My active participation in the Christian Science movement was a natural result of that shared "cup of cold water."
Two years ago, after suffering for some time with pain that did not yield to my scientific prayer, I took an unnecessary detour and decided to seek a medical diagnosis. Perhaps such an inclination had contributed to the delay in healing. A physician diagnosed a fibroid tumor and recommended immediate major surgery. My first thought was, "I will work this out with mental surgery in Christian Science." There was no reservation in my decision. For some years God had been my only physician, and I saw this as an opportunity to prove this Science heals.
