Testimonies of Healing

During the Second World War, when...

From the July 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During the Second World War, when there seemed to be nothing for me but insoluble problems, I was presented with a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. What a transformation it has brought! I can no longer identify myself today with the shy young woman I was. The reading of Science and Health opened the door to a new world. New ways opened, and the courage to walk in them was gained, step by step, through spiritual awakening. Little by little, injustices were resolved, and I found the strength to live a life of freedom and independent action.

It was interesting for me to learn at this point that my parents had become acquainted with Christian Science before I was born. My mother had lost a son when he was still an infant. She was no longer young, and the doctor said she could not have another child. At this point my parents learned about Christian Science. A practitioner encouraged my mother to expectantly recognize the spiritual identity that had always existed in perfection. Soon my mother was again expecting a child, and she always loved to tell how this pregnancy with me had been such a happy time for her. She had never felt better than at that time, and even the birth was a joy. Unfortunately my parents turned away from Christian Science, and I only learned of it much later.

Important to me was the recognition of man's spiritual sonship, his unity with God, his divine source. Christ Jesus' words (John 5:19), "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise," were illumined through Christian Science. I came to understand that "man is the expression of God's being" (Science and Health, p. 470). I saw this includes the expression of divine intelligence and ability. Since that time I have been able to receive the thoughts I needed, whenever I turned to God, my divine source.
