Poems

Sonnet to meekness

From the July 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The image in my mirror is so meek
It does not do a single thing alone;
It does not move or wince or smile or speak
Unless I do it too, for we are one.
Humility like this is plain to see,
For not before nor after does it act,
But selflessly and simultaneously—
So keeping our relationship intact.

Dependence of an image is so great!
I stand in wonder at the gentle grace
That won't accept a false or double state,
That will not try to wear another face.
Oh, may I be pure image such as this,
Reflecting God in all that really is!
