The unpartable firmament

From the July 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mortal mind, called Satan in the book of Job, boasts itself as "going to and fro in the earth, and . . . walking up and down in it." Job 1:7; This impostor would even barge into cherished moments of spiritual inspiration that elevate consciousness beyond the boundaries of that earth the devil paces.

Peter, James, and John were faced with this claim after their mountaintop experience when the transfigured Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah. What an awesome revelation of man's immortality and native spirituality! On their return to the people, an unyielding case of epilepsy challenged Jesus' uplifted consciousness. When he had brought about the healing, the disciples asked him, "Why could not we cast him out?" He spoke of their unbelief and added, "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." Unlike the disciples, Christ Jesus refused to accept this encroachment of mortal mind. The Bible tells us he had "rebuked the devil" and healed the child.See Matt. 17:1-21;

In Science, the unity of Mind and man seals man's perfection. The firmament, described in Genesis, "divide[s] the waters from the waters." Gen. 1:6; Metaphysically this is seen in Christian Science as our God-reflected understanding, dividing unreal material elements of thought from the real and spiritual. This firmament constitutes an uninvadable barrier to mortal mind, guaranteeing our ability to recognize the wholeness and sanctity of man's conscious spiritual being. "Science defines omnipresence as universality, that which precludes the presence of evil," Mrs. Eddy explains. In the same paragraph she continues, "Intelligent Spirit, Soul, is substance, far more imimpregnable and solid than matter; for one is temporal, while the other is eternal, the ultimate and predicate of being."
