Christian Science is not too hard for you

From the May 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes a person feels a genuine desire to be more honest, loving, and spiritually-minded, but is held back from progress because he or she feels the practice of Christian Science is too burdensome or difficult. If we feel this way, then maybe we need to look deeper into the demands and rewards of Christian discipleship.

No one knew better than Jesus the price of demonstrating the Christ. The Master illustrated the self-immolation and self-discipline required to achieve final salvation from matter. And yet he encouraged: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matt. 11:29, 30. How can this be, considering the demands of Christian living?

A yoke is a crossbar with two U-shaped pieces that encircle the necks of draft animals working in a team. Christ's yoke is obedience, and it's an easy yoke, when we take it upon us. Why? Because single-hearted obedience teams us with the power of God, which strengthens and supports our efforts to be and do good.
