During World War II, when the present Queen Mother was Queen of England, she was asked whether it was appropriate for her to wear her best dress when going to visit victims of bombing. She replied simply: "Of course. They would wear their best dresses if they were coming to see me." Quoted in The Observer (London), August 3, 1980. This example of impartial affection and respect can provide a lesson of spiritual significance for each of us.
Are we dressing our thought in our best each morning for the experiences of the day? What will the bus conductor, the shop assistant, or our colleagues see in us? Will they detect the strength of Spirit and comfort of divine Love expressed in the kindliness and simplicity of our demeanor?
None of us can shut ourselves off, hermitlike, from contacts with other people. Are we as sensitive to the mental touch of a stranger as Jesus was when a woman in need of healing "came in the press behind, and touched his garment"? Mark 5:27.
